WOLF, GEORGE. Hypothalamic regulation of sodium intake: relations to preoptic and tegmental function. Am. J. Physiol. 213(G): 1433-1438. 1967.-Rats with lesions of the septum, lateral preoptic area, or ventral tegmental area of Tsai showed no impairment of sodium appetite after adrenalectomy, acute sodium depletion, or deoxycorticosterone treatment. Rats with lesions of the lateral hypothalamus at the level of the ventromedial nucleus manifested severe impairment of sodium appetite after each of these manipulations. The results raise questions regarding the location of areas receiving information which is critical for regulation of sodium intake from the lateral hypothalamic area.

Periventricular preoptic-hypothalamus is vital for thirst and normal water economy.

A midline stereotaxic lesion in rats destroying the periventricular tissue (lamina terminalis and preoptic-anterior hypothalamic periventricular stratum) surrounding the anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V) produces adipsia without other marked behavioral changes. Although food consumption is reduced in animals rendered adipsic by the lesion, feeding continued and intake is comparable to that o...

Effects of Large and Small Hypothalamic Region on Transections Hydromineral of the Preoptic- Regulation in Rats

To further elucidate the role of the preoptic-hypothalamic region in fluid and electrolyte balance we studied the effect of surgical preoptic-hypothalamic disconnection using either a large (preoptic-hypothalamic disconnection) or a small (medial preoptic-hypothalamic disconnection) microknife. Both the large and small cuts seemed to transect the posterior projection originating in the perivent...

The medical septal area (MSA) provides the major cholinergic projection to the hippocampus which is critical for function of the memory. Different brain areas through the MSA modulates septohippocampal functions. This study was designed to determin origins of inputs to this area. For this purpose, stereotaxic injections of one microliter HRP (25 percent, Sigma) by Hamilton syringe to the medica...

Brain reward circuitry beyond the mesolimbic dopamine system: a neurobiological theory.

Reductionist attempts to dissect complex mechanisms into simpler elements are necessary, but not sufficient for understanding how biological properties like reward emerge out of neuronal activity. Recent studies on intracranial self-administration of neurochemicals (drugs) found that rats learn to self-administer various drugs into the mesolimbic dopamine structures-the posterior ventral tegmen...

Neural regulation of glucose homeostasis.

The regulation of blood glucose is generally stated to be under the control of the endocrine system. But the endocrine secretion is itself regulated by the central nervous system, especially the hypothalamus. The brain can sense the energy status of the body by using neural afferent signals and metabolic cues such as glucose. A variety of experimental evidences have been put forth to support th...
